Responsibilities

Optometric Technician Job Responsibilities 

  • Greet all office guests in a professional and friendly manner.  
  • Gather preliminary data through patient pretest, such as documenting chief complaints, gathering patient’s medical history, measuring visual acuity, eye movement, interocular pressure (IOP), retinal photos, visual fields, and optical coherence tomography (OCT).  
  • Educate the patient throughout the prescreening process about what each machine is testing for and provide instructions to provide accurate test results.  
  • Accurately and efficiently document the results of pretesting into the current EHR program.  
  • Educate and instruct the patient on insertion, removal, and proper care of contact lenses.

  • Assist other members of the team when needed and available.  
  • Will switch between front office/back office responsibilities as needed.

Daily Tasks:
1. Order Processing:

  • Initiate and manage the order of contact lenses for patients, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.

2. Patient Follow-Up:

  • Conduct call backs to follow up with patients regarding their contact lens orders and appointments.

3. Documentation and Communication:

1. CL Room Maintenance:

  • Regularly clean and stock the CL room, including emptying garbage and restocking folders and trials.
  • Re-call patients whose contact lenses have not been picked up, ensuring timely follow-up.

Monthly Tasks:
1. Supply Management:

  • Order CL room supplies, including cases, cleaners, training sheets, and other materials as requested by doctors.
  • Maintain pamphlet samples on display regarding contact lenses.

2. Administrative Duties:

  • Update CL fees in MaximEyes as needed, keeping printed copies in drawers for reference.
  • Conduct meetings with Contact Lens Representatives to stay updated on new contact lenses and rebates.
  • Communicate information about new lens types and rebates to the rest of the office staff.

Skills & Qualifications

Optometric Technician required skills & qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience in an optometric or other medical office preferred.
  • Knowledgeable about contact lenses and spectacle lens materials preferred.

SKILLS:

  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Ability to successfully multitask is required.
  • Computer experience required. Usable knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  • Prior knowledge and understanding of an Electronic Medical Records system preferred.
