Looking for an energetic, compassionate, people-person who is interested in a fulfilling career working with individuals with functional vision problems. Primarily working with school-age children, however, older kids and adults are also patients. This individual will work one-on-one performing therapeutic activities, exercises, and procedures to enhance visual skills. Looking for a person with a desire and passion to work hard and change lives. A vision therapist works under the direction and guidance of a Doctor of Optometry.

A bachelor’s degree is expected. 3-5 years experience working with and caring for the public in classroom, healthcare, or other therapy settings is highly recommended. Specific skills and training will all be provided and taught by a Doctor of Optometry. Continuing education, seminars, and ongoing training sessions will be provided by employer.

  • Carrying out the therapy program for given patients.
  • Providing appropriate documentation for the doctor to monitor progress.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized environment for therapy to take place.
  • Communicating with patients and their families both in-person and by email/phone.
  • Lead outreach by contacting groups, organizations, and professionals to generate referrals for optometric vision therapy.
  • Creating invoices for patient payment.
  • Assist other members of the team when needed and available.
  • All other duties assigned by management.

Skills & Qualifications

  • AA or BA/BS desired.
  • Previous experience in vision therapy, occupational therapy, teaching, or other medical rehabilitation fields is not required, but would be valuable.
  • Must enjoy working with children, experience/knowledge with ADHD/Autism is helpful.
  • Must have compassion for those suffering from anxiety/depression.
  • The ability and eagerness to learn.
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • A positive and engaging personality.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver therapeutic Neuro-Optometric treatment plans for patients in a variety of areas, including brain injury, sports advancement, computer-related stress syndrome, learning-related vision disorders, strabismus, and amblyopia. 
  • Develop individualized condition plans that target specific patient needs and goals through various exercises under the supervision of a behavioral optometrist. 
  • Teach patients and parents how to successfully perform treatment exercises and adjust them as needed to meet the patient’s level of success.
  • Make recommendations for changes in lifestyle and environment that could improve visual performance. 
  • Observe and document patient responses to therapy, identifying areas in the treatment plan that could benefit from adjustments. 
  • Conduct assessments of the function and processing of a patient’s visual system. 
  • Attend regular meetings with the team. 
  • Cross-train in other departments to understand the full operation and flow of the clinic. 
  • Engage in continuing education during and after on-the-job training. 
  • Contribute to the continued growth of the department. 
  • Maintain direct communication with patients regularly to check in and coordinate with any other caregivers/therapists and/or providers who are part of the patient’s treatment team.
