We are seeking a detail-oriented, proactive, and patient-focused Optometric Technician to join our optometry office. This role supports the doctor and clinical team by performing patient pre-testing, gathering medical and vision history, assisting with contact lens training, maintaining exam room flow, and helping ensure an efficient and positive patient experience. Responsibilities

1. Patient Pre-Testing and Support 

  • Perform preliminary testing for patients before the doctor’s examination. 
  • Gather and document patient medical history, vision concerns, medications, allergies, and reason for visit.
  • Perform testing such as autorefraction, lensometry, visual acuity, tonometry, retinal imaging, visual field screening, OCT, and other diagnostic testing as directed by the doctor. 
  • Prepare patients for the optometrist’s examination by ensuring testing is complete, accurate, and properly documented. 
  • Communicate relevant patient concerns or testing issues to the doctor and clinical team.

2. Contact Lens Training and Patient Education  

  • Train patients on contact lens insertion, removal, hygiene, and proper lens care. 
  • Provide patient education for soft contact lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses, specialty contact lenses, and other lens types as needed. 
  • Ensure patients feel comfortable and confident before leaving with trial lenses. 
  • Review contact lens wear schedules, cleaning instructions, and safety precautions. 
  • Communicate patient challenges or concerns with contact lens training to doctor

3. Patient Flow and Rooming

  • Escort patients to testing areas and exam rooms in a warm and professional manner. 
  • Support smooth patient flow by preparing rooms, monitoring patient status, and communicating with doctors and team members. 
  • Clean and sanitize exam rooms, equipment, and testing areas between patients according to office protocols. 
  • Help minimize patient wait times by staying aware of the schedule and assisting where needed. 
  • Prepare exam rooms and testing areas for the next patient to keep the clinic running efficiently.

4. Administrative Assistance

  • Assist the administrative team with appointment-related tasks, including recalls, confirmations, and schedule support.
  • Communicate with the front desk regarding patient readiness, delays, testing needs, and doctor availability.
  • Help maintain accurate patient records by updating information and documenting completed testing.
  • Support patient communication as needed by phone, text, or in person.
  • Assist with general office tasks that support daily operations.

5. Insurance Coordination and Billing

  • Assist with insurance-related tasks, including obtaining authorizations when needed.
  • Support the billing process for non-frame-related claims and diagnostic testing claims.
  • Assist with posting Explanation of Payment statements as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with the office’s insurance or billing specialist to support accurate and timely claim submission.
  • Communicate any insurance or authorization concerns to the appropriate team member before services are performed.

6. Contact Lens (CL) Management

  • Organize and maintain contact lens trial inventory.
  • Ensure trial lenses are stocked, labeled, accessible, and easy for the team to locate.
  • Track low inventory and coordinate reordering with vendors or suppliers.
  • Maintain an organized contact lens area to support efficient patient trials and follow-ups.
  • Assist with contact lens orders, trial lens tracking, and patient communication as needed.

7. Office Organization and Maintenance

  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and professional clinical environment. 
  • Keep testing areas, exam rooms, and equipment clean and ready for patients.
  • Assist with general tidying, restocking, and organization throughout the office.
  • Follow office procedures for equipment care, sanitation, and supply management.
  • Support a team environment by helping where needed during busy clinic flow.

Skills & Qualifications

Previous experience as an optometric technician, ophthalmic technician, medical assistant, or similar healthcare role preferred.
● Knowledge of basic optometric procedures and pre-testing preferred.
● Experience with contact lens training and patient education is a plus.
● Familiarity with insurance authorizations, billing support, and Explanation of Payment processing is a plus.
● Strong communication skills and ability to explain instructions clearly and patiently.
● Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
● Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical setting.
● Basic computer skills and ability to learn EHR, scheduling, and practice management systems.
● Friendly, professional, and patient-focused demeanor.
● Reliable attendance and punctuality are required.
